Radon is the 2nd leading cause of lung cancer after smoking. Fortunately, testing is inexpensive whether you choose to do it yourself or choose to hire a professional.
Radon Testing Q&A:
Q: Can I test my home for radon myself?
A: Absolutely, there are short and long term tests available. Check out www.mn.radon.com or www.getaradontest.com. Please keep in mind that if you're buying a home, the time it takes to conduct these tests and obtain the results will usually exceed the amount of time you have for your inspection contingency. In these cases, Oberg Inspections can arrange a 48 hour test using a continuous radon monitor with results available upon conclusion of the test.
Q: How much do you charge for a radon test?
A: 48 hour radon tests start at $175.00.
Q: How soon will I get the results?
A: Radon test results are sent to you the same day the test is concluded.
Q: I'm buying a townhome and there is no basement, do I really need a radon test?
A: Elevated radon levels have been found in all types of construction, including slab on grade townhomes and homes with crawlspaces. It is impossible to determine radon levels based on the type of construction, the only way to know is to perform a test.
Q: Is the radon test conclusive?
A: Not necessarily. Radon levels can fluctuate given many variables. The 48 hour test gives you a quick way to screen your home. You can learn more about test results on the MDH's website here.
Q: Where can I get more information about radon?
A: More information about radon can be found on the Minnesota Deparment of Health's website here.
