What is thermal imaging?
Thermal imaging, simply put, uses an infrared camera to visualize heat emission of objects. In other words, it allows the inspector to "see" how hot or cold objects are.
Why is thermal imaging useful?
Oberg Inspections offers thermal imaging either as a stand-alone service, or in addition to other services such as a home inspection. Thermal imaging often reveals information not available by other, non-intrusive means, such as an active leak in a roof or bathroom. Thermal imaging can be a great diagnostic tool in determining voids in insulation, locating heating wires or pipes in heated floors, and locating electrical shorts to name just a few applications. This photo depicts the location of a clog in an ABS drain pipe. The previously warm pipe was filled with cold water. Since the cold water couldn't make it past the blockage, it cooled the pipe all the way up to the clog, indicated by the circle. Below the blocked pipe is a copper cold water pipe running horizontally, seen as the dark blue line running horizontally.

In this image of a steel exterior door, a thermal image makes it quite obvious that there is substantial cold air intrusion at the bottom of the door. Fixing this would be a good place to start if one is looking to lower their heating costs.
